ANCESTRAL
MEMORIES: THE WORK OF IMNA ARROYO
Ancestral
Memories is composed of twenty-seven terracotta ceramic figures
in a sea of acrylic canvass. The figures represent the African
ancestors who died during the journey and are coming back
to tell us to remember our gifts. Visitors will learn something
of the history of the African slave trade as seen through
the eyes of Imna Arroyo, the artist who created this installation.
There is also a 6 minute DVD, titled Trail of Bones, which
tells this very poignant story and honors those who died on
the slave ships during the Atlantic crossing.MORE |

NEW
ACQUISITIONS
Over
the past decade, the museum has added over 850 objects to
its collections of local, national, and international artists.
Many of these works of art are on view for the first time
in the museum. With so many objects to display, the museum
will periodically alternate items. Some of the artists represented
in the current exhibition include Janet Fish, Ida Kohlmeyer,
Clyde Connell, Roy Ferdinand Jr., William Moreland, and Jimmy
Lee Sudduth. Thanks to donors such as Sylvia and Warren Lowe,
Sarah Jane Stephens, British Petroleum Corporation, and many
others. The museum will continue to develop areas of cultural
significance so that future generations are able to learn
about the art work and their creators. |
