Writing in the Galleries is an arts-based literacy program that gives students (1st-12th
) an opportunity to visit the museum and exercise language arts skills.
Visualizing, interpreting, and understanding are perhaps the most
important skills we learn, and communicating our observations is
accomplished by the written and spoken word. Through the Writing
in the Galleries program the works of art exhibited and that are
interpreted in the Museum become tools for achieving practical
goals in the language arts.
During these visits the students, teachers, and chaperones will
be guided by a Museum volunteer who will actively engage
the students in exercises and dialogue specifically developed
for Writing in the Galleries.
How to participate
Writing in the Galleries field trips are available March-May 2007. Morning (10AM-noon)
and afternoon (1-3 PM) time slots are available. Because Writing in the Galleries is highly
interactive, participation is limited to no more than 65 children at a time.
Call (337) 482-6060 or email us at wig2007@gmail.com and provide your name,
school, contact information and best time to call. We will respond with
additional information and answer any questions you may have.
How much will it cost?
The fee, which covers admission and Writing in the Galleries
workshop supplies, is $2 per child. Teachers and chaperones
participate at no cost.
Free admission and transportation is available in Spring 2007
through a Learn and Serve grant for Alice Boucher Elementary,
Westside Elementary, Ossun Elementary, Live Oak Elementary,
and all Title I schools in Vermilion Parish.
Is it possible to arrange a tour without writing exercises? Pre-arranged
docented tours of museum exhibitions are offered for adults
and youth. Group size is limited to 40 and the average tour
lasts 45 minutes. Download a copy of the tour
reservation request form.
