University Art Museum and AmeriCorps Awarded $38,000 Lafayette, December 2006, - The Louisiana Serves Commission awarded the University of Louisiana at Lafayette AmeriCorps Community Service Program and the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum a $38,000 grant for the Writing in the Galleries program. This grant will sustain Writing in the Galleries for two years, providing 3,000 students the opportunity to visit and learn at the Museum. WIG is an educational program developed and directed by Museum staff and University of Louisiana at Lafayette students serving in the campus AmeriCorps program. WIG uses original art presented in Museum exhibitions to inspire children, and activities tailored to grade-level benchmarks to improve writing skills. According to Megan Ernest, an AmeriCorps student working on the program, “This program helps kids reach into their imagination and use both art and literature to expand their minds.” Since the program began three years ago, WIG has provided an additional resource to improve literacy and promote language arts in Lafayette Parish Title 1 schools. This year, the program will expand to support schools in hurricane-affected parishes. After the destruction of Hurricanes Rita and Katrina, many schools are struggling to rebuild and meet performance standards. WIG helps to alleviate this problem by providing creative programming that can help improve academic performance. The funds provided by the ULS Serves grant make WIG available at no cost to teachers and students from hurricane-impacted elementary schools in Lafayette and Vermilion Parishes. A field trip to the Museum, admission and transportation are provided. Tours will begin in February and continue through the school year. WIG coordinators are currently taking reservations.
