UAM Celebrates the Opening of Spring Exhibitions
“Pattern Language: Clothing as Communicator, Organized by Tufts University Art Gallery and Judith Hoos Fox as guest curator, ” “ Paris: Photographs by Eugène Atget and Christopher Rauschenberg Organized by the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film” and “ Techniques and Styles: A Sampling of Paintings, Drawings and Prints from the Georgia Museum of Art”
Lafayette, January 2007 - The Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette will be celebrating the opening of three new exhibitions at the Spring Opening Reception at 6 p.m. Feb. 9. at the Museum. Come enjoy wine and hors d'oeuvres while viewing the new exhibitions. The Museum will present “Pattern Language: Clothing as Communicator,” “Paris: Photographs by Eugène Atget and Christopher Rauschenberg” and “Techniques and Styles: A Sampling of Paintings, Drawings and Prints from the Georgia Museum of Art .”
“Pattern Language: Clothing as Communicator” addresses an array of important themes on the subject of clothing and its use for communication within society. In this exhibition the viewer will have the opportunity to see the realms of society clothing can influence. Examples of clothing's use as function, formality, entertainment, self-expression and communication created by established and emerging artists from around the world are included in this exhibition. “Pattern Language” will be on view at the Museum Jan. 26 through April 28.
“Paris: Photographs by Eugène Atget and Christopher Rauschenberg” captures the beauty of Paris through the lenses of two photographers working a century apart. Eugène Atget (French, 1857-1927) came to Paris in order to document the city before its inevitable disappearance. During Napoleon III's reign as Emperor of France, he called for “la transformation de la ville” to make way for a modernized Paris that he envisioned. Atget captured the city in its historical form before and during the renovation process. American artist Chrisopher Rauschenberg traveled to photograph Paris in the late 1980s. Rauschenberg wanted to evoke the aesthetic and emotional tone and pay homage to his predecessor. Like Atget's documentation of Paris through photography, Rauschenberg also creates an artistic study of the city; only he does so in a postmodern era.

“Paris: Photographs by Eugène Atget and Christopher Rauschenberg” is an exhibition organized by George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film who gratefully acknowledges the support of The Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation. “Paris” is presented as part of the 2007 celebration commemorating the 250th anniversary of the birth of our community's namesake, the Marquis de La Fayette. This exhibition will be displayed at the Museum Jan. 27 through April 14.
“Techniques and Styles” is an educational exhibition that provides audiences an opportunity to study a variety of techniques and media used in creating works of art. “Techniques and Styles” was organized by the Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia, Athens. This exhibition is supported in part by the Georgia Council for the Arts through the appropriations of the Georgia General Assembly. The Council is a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. “Techniques and Styles” will be at the Museum Feb. 9 through April 28.###
