Fall 2006 Exhibitions at the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum Aim to Engage and
Inspire Visitors

Lafayette, LA- On September 15, the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Museum of Art will present three very unique and diverse exhibitions, Water and Light: James McNeill Whistler's Etchings and Drypoints of Venice and Amsterdam, Photorealist Paintings from the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Collection and Image and Word .

Water and Light presents a unique opportunity to view 26 prints from James McNeill Whister's (1834-1903) Venice and Amsterdam series. His Venice works and his later series of Amsterdam prints illustrate two of the artist's favorite subjects: water and the believable portrayal of artificial and natural light.

Photorealist Paintings displays the precision and technique of the photorealist style of painting, popular in the 1960s and 1970s, with 20 works from the Sydney and Walda Besthoff collection. This exhibition includes the work of the first generation of American photorealists. Works by R.E. Penner, Tjalf Sparney, Ralph Goings, Randy Dudley, Ralph Goings, Ben Johnson, David Cone, Martin, D. J. Hall, Chuck Close, Richard McLean, Robert Bechtle, John Baeder, Philip Pearlstein, Don Eddy, Idelle Weber, Richard Estes, Kim Mendenhall, John Salt, David Parrish, and Alice Dalton Brown are included in the exhibition.

Image and Word will highlight drawings, paintings and prints from artists including Marc Chagall, Bernhard Gutmann, Mary Cassatt, Willem de Kooning, Edouard Vuillard, Maurice de Vlaminck, Reynolds Beal, Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, William Glackens, Frank Duvenek, Philip Leslie Hale, Childe Hassam, John Sloan, Arthur Dove, John Marin and James McNeill Whistler. This cameo exhibition was curated as an opportunity to engage students and visitors in the interdisciplinary activities studying the language and visual arts. Gallery activities in the language arts have been developed for both youth and adults.
