FOR IMMEDATE RELEASE April 11, 2006 Contact: MUSEUM FEATURES INSTALLATION ABOUT NEW ORLEANSLAFAYETTE, LA - The Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette will present an installation of new work by artist Margaret Evangeline titled Dodge a Bullet . Organized by the University Art Museum in collaboration with the artist, the exhibit will open on April 21, 2006 and continue through August 26, 2006. “Soon after hurricanes Katrina and Rita ravaged the Louisiana coast we realized our university and museum faced some serious budget challenges,” said Mark Tullos, Deputy Director for the University Art Museum. “I called Margaret and asked her to consider developing an installation with a nominal budget and a short time frame. Evangeline is one of the most significant artists of our time and as a Louisiana native, was more than willing to participate in this effort.” Margaret Evangeline, now based in New York, has long experimented with different materials making declarative works that extend the immediacy of a moment. Evangeline uses gunshots to alter mirror-polished stainless steel and open up the all over 2D picture plane with its taproot in New American-Type painting. “This is an exhibition dedicated to the victims of the hurricanes,” says Evangeline. “I want it to convey what was unsayable then and now, to what we know in our bones through emptiness. My work has always been about what's in this space, the breath between words. Emptiness exists at the edge of something else and at the edge of our vision. It restores our ability to see what we hadn't considered. It strengthens our willingness to drop our armor plated conditioning for at least the space of a moment.” “This is an installation made of aesthetically resistant materials that reference stormy weather, human invention, understanding, immobility, means of escape,” says Evangeline. “The space between these objects becomes a theatre of zero, a shifting point, a place to come to terms with a humble thing we can barely speak of: love.” This exhibit was made possible through the support of private gifts, Heriard-Cimino Gallery and the contribution of services by Begneaud Manufacturing, Lafayette, Louisiana. Don and Andy Begneaud and their employees fabricated most of the pieces in the exhibit, working closely with the artist. “Don Begneaud, attended UL Lafayette, has a passion for the arts and was most generous in supporting this project,” says Tullos. Margaret Evangeline is frequently written about in the New York Times , Art in America , ARTnews , The Chicago Tribune , Architectural Digest , and many other publications. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant 2001, and a New York Foundation for the Arts grant 1996. Solo exhibits of the artist's work have been held at venues as various as The Palm Beach ICA, The Delaware Center for the Arts, The Hafnarborg Art Museum outside Reykjavik, Iceland, and the Taipei Museum in Taiwan. In recent videos, she experiments with sound and actions collected while shooting at the steel panels of a commissioned sculpture. The site-specific installation titled, Once Upon a Time America is now in the permanent collection of The Fields at ArtOmni, near Ghent, New York. There will be an opening reception on Friday, April 21, 2006 and the artist will be in attendance. “This exhibition is both timely and challenging, we anticipate the outcomes will be both provocative and enlightening,” says Tullos. Margaret Evangeline will present an artist talk on Friday, April 21 st at 3:00 in Fletcher Hall Auditorium and the public is invited. Complementing the Margaret Evangeline exhibition will be two additional exhibitions, Women Artists and Landscapes drawn from the Corporate Collection of A.G. Edwards & Sons.
